The art of managing expectations

In my line of work, you do see patterns of behaviours within owners of allied health practices and you see patterns of operations and statistics within allied health practices.

A really common one is the owner’s frustration in not being able to clone themselves.

To the best of my knowledge, you can’t unless you’re a sheep…

Who knows maybe one day you will be able to. But until that day occurs, we need to manage our expectations.

Many practice owners struggle with the idea of letting go or allocating responsibilities to other members of their team.

The reality is if they don’t, their practice probably won’t grow.

Like all teams, the team is only as strong as the weakest member.

If you think you have members of your team that you cannot delegate to and who won’t represent you in a way in which you are comfortable then perhaps have a think about whether you want them on your team.

For anyone who started a practice from scratch, they are used to doing everything… and I mean everything.

From treating the patient to doing the banking to doing the cleaning, the hiring and firing of staff, window cleaning and buying the tea and coffee for the staffroom.

You know and I know the list is endless.

It’s exhausting, and the reality is you can’t do it all…

To grow you need to delegate and you need to understand that while staff may not do things as perfectly as you believe you do, the key is to have them do it as close to what you would do as possible.

Only then will your team have success and flourish and only then will your practice truly grow.

Who knows if you delegate and instil responsibility they may become more valuable to your business than you think.

They may become more valuable to the business than you are… now wouldn’t that be nice!

So, give some thought to your structures and systems that allow your staff to grow and enable you to delegate – it could be life-changing!
